I am many things to many people but today I am only here to be a source for those searching for spinal fusion stories. I have spent many hours I don't have searching for info on spinal fusion surgery and have not found what I a was looking for. So today I am starting this blog in hopes it is what you are looking for. And I want it for personal record of this journey I am about to embark on.

The main Problems (L4 thru S1)
Spondylolisthesis -A slipped vertebra, occurs when one vertebra shifts forward on the next vertebra directly below. It usually occurs at the base of the spine (lumbosacral junction). In severe cases, the bone narrows the spinal canal, which presses on the nerves.
Spinal stenosis - narrowing of the spinal canal.
Degenerative disc disease - the discs in the spine (the pillow-like pads between the bones) lose their cushioning.
Herniated (slipped) disks- occur when all or part of a spinal disk is forced through a weakened part of the disk. This places pressure on nearby nerves.
The Procedures
I will be having a laminectomy on L4-L5 and L5-S1. I will have L4-L5 fused and L5-S1 fused. My surgery is scheduled for May 11, 2010.
Laminectomy - Removal of most of the bony arch, or lamina, of a vertebrae
Spinal Fusion- The spine is stabilized by fusing together two or more vertebrae, using bone grafts and metal rods and screws.
